Ko Terati toku ingoa
(My name is Terati) - 2025 Archibald entry
Fiercely proud of his Maori heritage, Gerry Terati Lyons is also a well known advocate for Indigenous music. He’s worked in the field of First Nations media for many years, promoting local and homegrown singers and performers.
The ‘G-man’, as he’s also known, has a boundless energy and enthusiasm; his love for his community comes through in equal measure whether as a radio host interviewing ‘up-and-comers’, or volunteering with the local Rotary club.
It was a privilege to paint this passionate and genuine man; someone so deeply connected to his roots – language, customs and traditions – and dedicated to supporting Aboriginal peoples in their artistic and cultural expression.
